Insurance Comparison Websites
These are tools to help you save on your insurance coverage by saving you time and making it easier to get more quotes to compare and get the best price!
Insurance comparison websites save you time by allowing you to input most of the data needed by the insurance companies just one time and they then transmit this information automatically to multiple individual insurance companies’ websites. This saves you the time of having to enter this data multiple times on multiple websites yourself. You may still need to add additional information later in the process on the insurance companies’ own websites, but the bulk of the data entry process will already have been done.
These platforms can save you more money by helping you get as many quotes as possible in your efforts to find the lowest price. They can also help you compare prices, coverage options, and benefits.
Additionally, many of these websites provide educational materials and insurance guides to help you make the best decisions regarding the types of coverage (e.g. home, auto, life, etc.), coverage options (e.g. contents coverage for homes, collision/comprehensive coverage for autos, etc.), and the amounts of coverage.
Some will tell you that they provide side-by-side comparisons, but for most the reality is that they will simply provide you with a list of insurance companies that provide the type of coverage you’re looking for, and in the geographical area in which you need the coverage. A limited few will actually include price quotes on the list presented, but they typically won’t include pricing for all of the insurers on the list. For the ones that don’t include pricing, you will then have to click-through to the insurance companies’ websites and provide any additional information they may require to then receive your quotes.
Auto insurance is the type of insurance that most of these platforms specialize in helping you get quotes. Home insurance would be second - a distant second. For all other types of insurance, these platforms will (with possible exceptions) simply provide you with a list of insurance companies to which you will be redirected to the insurance companies’ websites if you are interested in getting quotes.
Not all insurers participate with every insurance comparison website, so exploring multiple platforms can still be beneficial. This still beats having to input your information multiple times on each insurance company’s website.
While there are benefits to using these platforms, there are downsides to be aware of. Sharing your information on these platforms will most likely result in marketing communication including emails and phone calls from the insurance comparison websites themselves as well as from the insurance companies listed on their websites, and in some circumstances from insurance brokers affiliated in some way with them. Some of the insurance comparison platforms and some of the insurance companies will only provide quotes after they actually contact you, either by phone or email, so be prepared for that. There are also privacy concerns about sharing personal information across multiple platforms. The information typically required on these websites are: name, address, date of birth and/or age, email, phone number, gender, and marital status. A few of the websites may also ask for household income, occupation, credit score or credit score range, and driver’s license numbers. It is best to not provide social security numbers and driver’s license numbers at this point in the quote process, though this information will most likely be required by the actual insurance companies at some point in the process in order for you to actually buy coverage.
